What is Imitrex (Sumatriptan)?

Sumatriptan Succinate (Imitrex) is a triptan, an anti-migraine medicine. Sumatriptan is used to treat acute migraine attacks with or without aura and cluster headaches. Imitrex is effective in women with menstrual migraine, migraineurs with asthma, people with early morning migraine, and in adolescents.

Sumatriptan is Not indicated for the management of hemiplegic or basilar migraine or for prophylaxis of migraine or cluster headache.

How long does it take for Sumatriptan to work?

Oral tablets: onset of migraine relief generally begins after 30 minutes of dosing and peaks 2 to 4 hours thereafter.

Nasal spray: onset of headache relief occurs after 15-30 minutes.

Sub-Q injection: significant relief of migraine headache is usually experienced after about 10 to 15 minutes; maximum relief is attained within 90 minutes to 2 hours.

Sumatriptan dosage

Tablets: 25, 50, or 100 mg as a single dose.

If the headache returns, or if there is an incomplete relief, the dose may be repeated after 2 hours. If the first dose of Imitrex has not helped your headache at all, do not take a second dose without consulting a doctor first. Do not exceed 200 mg during any 24-hour period.

Nasal spray: 5, 10, or 20 mg as a single dose. Doses >20 mg provide no additional relief. To achieve a 10 mg dose, spray a single 5 mg dose into each nostril. If headache recurs, dose may be repeated once after 2 hours, up to a maximum dosage of 40 mg daily.

Sub-Q injection: up to 6 mg. Sub-Q injection may be repeated once after 1 hour. Do not exceed two 6 mg injections during any 24-hour period.

Sumatriptan and triptans

Longer acting triptans such as frovatriptan (Frova), naratriptan (Amerge), and eletriptan (Relpax) may work better for headache recurrence-prone persons. Frovatriptan (Frova) seems to have the lowest recurrence rate of all triptans (10% to 25%).

So far subcutaneous sumatriptan is the most effective and the fastest acting triptan preparation. Subcutaneous injection alleviates headache within 2 hours in about 80% of patients.

Among oral triptans rizatriptan (Maxalt), eletriptan (Relpax), and almotriptan (Axert) provide the highest likelihood of consistent success. Sumatriptan is comparable to zolmitriptan (Zomig) and superior to naratriptan (Amerge).

Where to buy Imitrex without prescription?

In the UK following reclassification from "prescription-only" to "pharmacy medicine" status sumatriptan 50 mg tablets (Imigran Recovery) are now available for sale over-the-counter (OTC). In the United States and most developed countries, sumatriptan (Imitrex) is not available without prescription.
