EcoSlim Ingredients: Review of Scientific Evidence
We have found scientific studies confirming the effectiveness of EcoSlim herbal components.
- 1. Fucus vesiculosis (Bladderwrack)
Fucus vesiculosus is a brown seaweed that grows on the northern coasts of the Atlantic and Pacific oceans and the North and Baltic seas. Bladderwrack is rich in calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium, sulfur, silicon and iron and high in some B-complex vitamins.
Bladderwrack contains high levels of iodine. As a result, the herb stimulates thyroid function which boosts metabolism. It was also historically used as a bulk-forming laxative.
There is only one, inconclusive published study (in French) on the effects of Fucus vesiculosis in obesity (1).- 1. Gaigi S, Elati J, Ben Osman A, Beji C Experimental study of the effects of seaweed in the treatment of obesity (Article in French). Tunis Med 1996; 74: 241-243.

- 2. Garcinia cambogia (Malabar tamarind)
Garcinia cambogia is a small, sweet, exotic fruit native to South India and Southeast Asia. This fruit is rich in a substance called Hydroxycitric acid (HCA).
The promise of Hydroxycitric acid is based on animal studies that suggest it inhibits fat synthesis and perhaps suppresses appetite and promote weight loss(2, 3, 4). Human studies have not been consistent, however, with one reporting no benefits while another reported improved results when combined with a weight-loss diet.
The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) published a study (1) that used a daily dose of 1500 mg of HCA over a 12-week period on healthy, overweight adults. At the end of the study, the group receiving garcinia cambogia did not see statistically different weight loss from the control group. However, this study has been criticized by some, with the claim that the high-fiber diet used in the trial likely interfered with the body’s ability to absorb HCA. Unfortunately, the study did not test the subjects to see whether HCA was found in the cells where it becomes active.- 1. Heymsfield SB, Allison DB, Vasselli JR, Pietrobelli A, Greenfield D, Nunez C. - 3. Capsicum minimum (Cayenne pepper)
EcoSlim also contains Cayenne pepper. It is a stimulating herb made from the dried pods of chili peppers and is well known for its pungent taste and smell.
Cayenne’s benefits are derived from the active ingredient capsaicin. Capsaicin gives cayenne its heat.
All that heat you feel after eating hot chili peppers takes energy - and calories to produce. Research suggests that incorporating cayenne pepper into the diet may help people lose weight. Controlled studies report that adding 6 to 10 grams of cayenne to a meal or 28 grams to an entire day’s diet reduces hunger after meals and reduces calories consumed during subsequent meals (1, 2, 4). Other controlled studies have reported that calorie burning by the body increases slightly when 10 grams of cayenne is added to a meal or 28 grams is added to an entire day’s diet (3).- 1. - 4. Taraxacum officinalis (Dandelion)
Historically, dandelion was most commonly used to treat liver diseases, kidney diseases, and spleen problems.
Today, dandelion is used as a liver or kidney "tonic," as a diuretic.
Animal studies report mixed results, and there is no reliable human research in this area.- 1. Racz-Kotilla E, Racz G, Solomon A. The action of Taraxacum officinale extracts on the body weight and diuresis of laboratory animals. Planta Med 1974;26(3):212-217
- 5. Glycorrhiza glabra (Licorice)
Another promising ingredient in EcoSlim is Licorice. It is a flavorful herb with a long history of medicinal use in both Eastern and Western systems of medicine.
A recent Italian human study found that a preparation of licorice may reduce body fat. Fifteen normal-weight participants consumed licorice for 2 months (3.5 g a day). Body fat mass was measured before and after treatment. Licorice was able to reduce body fat mass and to suppress the hormone aldosterone (1).
Another study found that a topical preparation of glycyrrhetinic acid (a component of licorice) was able to reduce the thickness of fat on the thigh in human subjects.- 1. Centaury is reputed as an aromatic bitter and tonic and acts on the liver and kidneys to purify the blood.- 1. Hepatoprotective activity of Centaurium erythraea on acetaminophen-induced hepatotoxicity in rats. Mroueh M, Saab Y, Rizkallah R. Phytother Res. 2004 May;18(5):431-3. PubMed

- 7. Paulina cupana (Guarana)
Ecoslim contains Guarana. It is a small, bright-red fruit with black seeds. It is an effective central nervous system stimulant. Guarana contains very high concentrations of caffeine and has been used as a stimulant and appetite suppressant. Guarana seeds are also rich in tannins and xanthine alkaloids theophylline and theobromine.
Some evidence indicates that guarana may suppress appetite and increase fat-burning.
An animal study (2) examined the effect of 14 days of guarana supplementation on fat metabolism in sedentary and trained rats and found that the guarana's fat-burning effect is due to the caffeine content.
One study (1) showed an average 11.2 pound (5.1 kilogram) weight loss in a group taking a mixture of yerba mate, guarana, and damiana, compared to an average one pound loss in a placebo group after 45 days.
Recent UK study (3) found no effect on body weight of a formula containing guarana.
A double-blind, placebo-controlled study tested the effects of guarana plus Ma Huang (Ephedra) for weight loss (4). The results showed significantly greater weight loss in the treated group than in the placebo group. However, ephedra is an unsafe substance.- 1. - 8. Curcuma longa (Turmeric)
Turmeric comes from the root of the Curcuma longa plant and has a tough brown skin and a deep orange flesh. Curcumin has a surprisingly wide range of beneficial properties. It has long been used in the Chinese and Indian systems of medicine to treat a wide variety of conditions, including flatulence, jaundice, menstrual difficulties, bloody urine, hemorrhage, toothache, bruises, chest pain, and colic.
Modern research (mainly animal studies) has shown that Curcuma has a beneficial effect on the liver, stimulating the flow of bile, which is responsible for the breakdown of dietary fat (1). Therefore, the connection of turmeric and weight loss exists in the functions of the bile.
Recently a team of US researchers (2) have discovered that turmeric-fed laboratory mice were less likely to be obese or suffer from diabetes than mice that did not receive this tasty treat in their feed. When compared to controls, the turmeric-fed animals showed more stable weight, reduced inflammation, and healthier liver tissues.- 1. - 9. Zingiber officinalis (Ginger)
The rhizomes (underground stem) and stems of ginger have assumed significant roles in Chinese, Japanese and Indian medicine. Today, ginger root is widely used as a digestive aid for mild stomach upset and to help prevent or treat nausea and vomiting.

- 10. Gallium aparine (Cleavers or Goosegrass)
Cleavers in EcoSlim is a very valuable plant, being perhaps the best tonic to the lymphatic system available. As a lymphatic tonic with alternative and diuretic action, Cleavers is particularly useful in the treatment of toxic conditions associated with tissue oedema and water retention.
